Radio Free Europe Poster

Radio Free Europe Fund raised private funds for Radio Free Europe in the 1960s with such billboards and ads, but the bulk of funding for Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty during the Cold War came from the United States government. Until 1972, RFE and RL were funded covertly by the CIA and later through overt appropriations from the U.S. Congress. Both Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty played a major role in breaking down censorship by communist regimes. Their journalists contributed to the eventual fall of communism in countries of Eastern and Central Europe and in the Soviet Union.
