In reply to Zyg Plater.

Thank you Professor Plater for your comment and for reminding us about the exemplary role played by your father, Konstanty Broel Plater, when he was employed during World War II in the Office of War Information (OWI) and resigned from his position as a Voice of America (VOA) Polish broadcaster rather than to read Soviet propaganda lies about the Katyn massacre and other Stalin-perpetuated atrocities. Sadly, you are also right that some of this history is repeating itself now. I also see, however, some encouraging signs that Americans of both parties and of many political persuasions are beginning to see through such KGB-style propaganda and disinformation from the Kremlin. The National Security Strategy of the United States published in December 2017 and signed by President Trump says that “ China and Russia challenge American power, influence, and interests, attempting to erode American security and prosperity. They are determined to make economies less free and less fair, to grow their militaries, and to control information and data to repress their societies and expand their influence.“ This is a welcome change, as is enhanced American military presence in Poland, again a welcome change. The National Security Strategy document also says that “Russia aims to weaken U.S. influence in the world and divide us from our allies and partners. Russia views the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and European Union (EU) as threats.” The document also notes that “Through modernized forms of subversive tactics, Russia interferes in the domestic political affairs of countries around the world. The combination of Russian ambition and growing military capabilities creates an unstable frontier in Eurasia, where the risk of conflict due to Russian miscalculation is growing.” This re-statement of the strategic threat from Russia is actually much stronger than what it was prior to 2016. I was encouraged that high-level European NATO security experts I met recently in Berlin seemed reassured. They were more concerned about some of France’s current views on NATO and the past U.S. change of position on the missile defense in Poland and the Czech Republic during the prior administration. Hopefully, this current change in the U.S. administration’s strategic thinking about Russia will continue. I hope it represents a change in the U.S. President’s position on Russia. You are absolutely correct that he was wrong to accept Putin’s word that Russia did not try to interfere in the 2016 U.S. elections. As long as Putin rules in Russia, such interference will continue.
This is a chastening history that rings true for my siblings and me. Our father, Konstanty Broël Plater, was a broadcast announcer for OWI's Polish service. He repeatedly tried to tell the US managers for OWI that the American radio broadcasts to Poland were being written by Soviet sympathizers covering up Communist horrors like the mass killing of 20,000 Polish officers in the Katyn Forest. The bosses told him they "were sorry, but Mr. Roosevelt wanted it this way." Dad resigned in deep frustration. Sadly, the KGB was able to continue its Soviet misinformation in American media for long after the war. And even more sadly, we now have a KGB genius totally manipulating a far less intelligent but equally-duped American president more drastically than Stalin ever thought possible. When asked in Helsinki whether he rejected Russian actions to switch the 2016 US election, Trump replied "President Putin, he just said it’s not Russia. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be." But it's obvious why it would be: Once more, Russia wants to advance itself by undercutting America, working by proxy to tear America apart. In its current Putin incarnation, the KGB is winning once again.
